Fire Pits - Where Writers Learn to Write

By Geoffrey Moore

Are there writers among us? Chances are, there are. Writers write. They learn to do so by doing it, and doing it often. Many writers prefer the light of a campfire, and time spent alone in the wilderness around a fire pit is a great place for inspiration to strike. Creativity is kindled with the kindling of freshly lit firewood.

The peace and quiet around a campfire is a natural place for stories to be born and novels to be written, forged ahead one page at a time, one word at a time. Better than a writer's retreat, with the noisome criticism of your contemporaries, time spent alone around the fire pit, contemplating your story one word at a time as imaginary worlds are formed, is the way great books are written. Experienced novelists and beginners alike will find that quality alone time is the best thing for their writing. Nothing can compare with it.

Do you know where your next story is coming from? What is the source of your creativity? From yourself. To get the story from yourself, you must set aside a certain amount of time to be with yourself, by yourself. Whether you choose to scribble out notes longhand or bring a laptop or PDA, it's up to you. The point is to get away. Spend some quality time around the campfire.

This is when you get to turn off that inner critic in you, telling you you're not good enough, the story isn't right, the characters are all wrong. Just shut all of that off and listen to your thoughts and the crackle of wood as you tell yourself the story. That's what you're doing when you write, after all. Take either a weekend, or, if you are able to, an entire week and just listen to the sounds of nature and absorb the ambient light from the fire as you write your story.

Editing will come later, when you switch off the creative side of your brain and embrace the inner critic in you. Their will be time, then, for a rewrite, or two, if you prefer. Camping is an adventure, and it is often best enjoyed alone, especially for the more creative amongst us. Do you have an outline? Make one, if you haven't already. When you are ready to sit down and write your story, make sure the fire is going full blast.
